NFC Championships: 2 Great Defenses, but Very Different.

Today we get watch what are considered 2 great defenses, the SF 49ers and the Seattle Seahawks.  But upon further examination what a difference in the make-up of the players!

The SF 49ers defense is built from great drafting of their top pick or signing others- 7 of their starters were Number 1 picks, 3 3rd round picks and one fifth.  Now Donte Whitner, Justin Smith, Carlos Rogers and Glenn Dorsey were drafted number 1 by other teams and smartly signed as free agents by San Francisco.  Quite an impressive group of athletes to coach.

The Seattle Seahawks, on the other hand only have 2 #1 draft picks starting on their defense in Bruce Irvin and Earl Thomas.  They have 7 players that were undrafted or 5-7th round, including the great Richard Sherman and Kam Chancellor, (both 5ths).   Bobby Wagner came through as a second rounder and Cliff Avril as a FA signing from the Lions (was a 3rd).

This is what makes the game of football so unique.  Two great defenses that gel, one built with College superstar draft picks, the other with guys not as highly touted but their heart and “Chip on the shoulder” also steps up as a group.

It still comes down to basics, hitting, tackling, and non stop motors! And a Coach that motivates!
