There’s Nothing like Training Camp
What a great first day at Jet camp. Not a cloud in the sky and 75 degrees, I had a chance to reconnect with all the Jet beat writers on the sidelines. Practice was quick tempo and both Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith threw well. The team has had a big change with so many familiar names gone including Bart Scott, Sione Pouha, Shonn Green, Dustin Keller, Mike Divito, and Darrelle Revis, so I’m sure using the roster list they gave me to learn the new names and numbers.
Had an amazing 20 minute talk with Senior Director of College Scouting Terry Bradway, new General Manager John Idzik, and Owner Woody Johnson. I had worked with John Idzik’s dad back in 1977-79 when he was an assistant coach (offensive coordinator) and I was amazed his son (then a teen and ball boy) remembered me. Such fun reminiscing and what a great way to start my Jet week!
Reviewing the Talent
One of highlights today was Quinton Coples and his speed and attitude. He and Mo Wilkerson were chasing down RBs and QBs including an amazing display of Coples quickness in not allowing Geno Smith to get outside and turn the corner. He owned the rookie. If he keeps this up, Jets defensive line will be much improved, something we’ve needed dominance from for a long time.
Bilal Powell and John Griffin looked good at RB, with impressive speed of Griffin that I didn’t expect. Clyde Gates had an awesome day at WR. Antonio Cromartie and Braylon Edwards too. Kyle Wilson and Cromartie against Braylon really went at it with refs calling penalties which let to spirited disagreements. It was very healthy, competitive, and intense for a first practice.
I’m really hoping to judge more especially on Sunday when they’re in pads with full hitting and also getting to study the offensive line with so much competition. That’s when it really gets good.
I’ve grown to love this place and they sure welcome the Jets. Ready for day 2 at 10 AM tomorrow.
