The Era of Geno (and Youth) Begins

What a non-surprise! Geno Smith to start for the New York Jets on Sunday!

Though Geno had a poor outing against the Giants (certainly not the first rookie to experience that), Mark Sanchez lost out being the starter by getting injured.  Matt Simms has looked great in one quarter against the Giants and in the final pre-season game, but it was against the 2nd and 3rd string players.  I have to say watching Matt Simms in practice his pro arm is obvious.  His arm is strong and catches the eye right away. But then he throws one that makes me shake my head for an interception or nowhere near the receiver.  But he went to three colleges, had early difficulties, benchings, and just never put things together.  If he continues to progress, his guts and toughness are obvious along with the arm, the Jets will have a solid backup.

Geno Smith has a strong and accurate arm.  He can run but he is a pocket QB.  The Jets are a young team and this kind of excites me. We are building through the draft, signing some good undrafted free agents (UFAs), and even our veterans are under 30.  I’m looking to see Geno start, not looking over his shoulder if he makes rookie mistakes, and watching this team grow this year.

I don’t expect miracles. But instead of bringing guys from other teams with 2 years left in their career and trying to mix and match, I’m ready to have growing pains, see if Geno is the real deal, watch some rookies like Milliner, Richardson, Spadola, Bohannon step up, then have another big draft next year.  I know I’m in the minority but if I see hard physical play, emotion, an offense that scores and shows the vertical game, a defense that keeps us in games, then I know we are heading in the right direction.

That is all I ask!
